
SOME OF THE CHALLENGES WE ADDRESS
The production of Portland cement currently accounts for about 6-8% of our global emissions of CO2. By developing technologies to reduce the proportion of Portland cement in concrete, we can save large amounts of energy, drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reduce our reliance on Portland cement. In Sweden, the goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the concrete industry by 50 percent by 2030 and to be completely climate neutral by 2050.
To achieve this, innovative solutions are required. New cement binders with ultra-low climate impact are now being developed in Sweden. These products are often based on residual products from Swedish and European industry. This development is important for the climate, but is also important for Swedish industry and its competitiveness in a global market. Concrete based on recycled materials has the potential to generate major positive effects on resource utilization and climate as the concrete industry can use less Portland cement in concrete structures. With the new cement binders, however, come new challenges. Among other things, new complementary technologies are required to maintain the unique strength properties of the concrete and to ensure durability in cold climates.
